Mike Bespalov experimented with OpenAI's new o3-mini.
In case you missed this, OpenAI recently rushed to defend its market position?by introducing its new AI reasoning model, o3-mini, which beats its predecessor, o1-mini, in both speed and accuracy. This is the first time OpenAI has made a small reasoning LLM available for free to all ChatGPT users, accessible by selecting Reason in the message composer or regenerating a response. There are three reasoning options, low, medium, and high, to suit different use cases.
Product Designer Mike Bespalov spent an hour experimenting with o3-mini-high and successfully built an image-to-ASCII art converter, exactly the tool he had always wanted. The developer noted that while older models could accomplish this, with o3-mini, there was no need for rewrites, debugging, or retries, just a few prompts, and it worked perfectly right away.
