DIY Shampoo: It’s Easier than You Think! If you’re looking for a way to give your hair some extra TLC, why not try making your own shampoo? DIY shampoo can be an easy and economical way to provide the perfect nourishment for any hair type. All you need are a few everyday ingredients, such as Castile soap, honey, or essential oils. So why not get creative in the kitchen and whip up some homemade shampoo?

With most store-bought shampoos containing synthetic agents that can damage both your scalp and strands, DIYing it is definitely worth considering.

DIY Shampoo

Ah, shampoo. We all need it, but most of us don’t give it much thought — that is until we get to the store and realize how expensive it can be. This is why I love my DIY Shampoo! All you need are some basic pantry items like baking soda, vinegar, and essential oils to whip up your own custom creation. So grab those supplies and let’s get to work! With these easy steps in hand, you’ll be rocking beautiful tresses in no time.

Making Your Shampoo

Basic Shampoo Ingredients:

  • 1/4 cup distilled water
  • 1/4 cup liquid Castile Soap
  • 1/2 teaspoon light vegetable oil (I prefer Jojoba)
  • 5-8 drops of essential oil of choice (my favorites are rosemary, lavender, or tea tree oil)
  • Flip Cap Bottle (I saved a commercial shampoo bottle – washed it- and reuse it)

Mix together all of the ingredients. Store your shampoo in a bottle. Make sure you shake well before use. This shampoo isn’t thick like commercial shampoos – I usually just tilt the bottle over my head and pour it directly on my hair.

HINT:

Try adding honey for extra hydration, or apple cider vinegar for a boost of shine.

Benefits of Homemade Shampoo

Making your own shampoo means you know exactly what’s going into it. No more worrying about harsh chemicals or parabens lurking in those pretty bottles – just natural ingredients that you choose yourself.

The best part? You can customize your recipes depending on your hair type and needs! Got an oily scalp? Whip up a lemon juice-and-honey concoction for extra shine control. Dry locks need some TLC? Give them some hydration with coconut oil and aloe vera gel mix.

Types of Natural Ingredients

Here’s a look at some of the most popular types of natural ingredients people use for making their own shampoo:

Castile Soap

Castile soap is one option for DIYers who want an inexpensive and all-natural shampoo. Derived from olive oil, Castile soap is gentle on both skin and hair but still provides a deep cleanse without stripping away any essential oils.

Honey

For those interested in having a special ingredient in their homemade shampoos, honey is another great option. It’s naturally soothing and has great moisturizing properties. It also doesn’t strip hair of its natural oils, so it’s a popular option for those with dry or damaged locks.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar is another ingredient that works great as a base for homemade shampoos. It’s a natural conditioner, so it helps to keep hair smooth and shiny without weighing it down. It also helps to get rid of any buildup in the hair caused by styling products or environmental pollution.

Essential Oils

Essential oils can also provide benefits to hair. Lavender essential oil is a great option for those with dry or damaged locks. It’s naturally hydrating and works wonders for “re-balancing” the scalp. Tea tree oil has antibacterial and antifungal properties. It’s a natural way to prevent dandruff and also helps to stop hair loss.
