The history of the Christkindlmarkt began in 1939. A city official named Carl Ben Eielson was inspired by a visit to Germany where he saw the Christmas markets filled with vendors selling hand-crafted goods and food. He wanted to bring that tradition to Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.

So, he went to the local Lutheran church and asked whether they’d allow him to set up a Christmas market in the courtyard of their church. The pastor agreed, and the first Christkindlmarkt was held in 1940.
